Already running a firm? We’ve thought about that.

Already running a practice? Here are the questions we’re designing the onboarding experience around.

Can I bring my existing bookkeeping firm into Broken Books?

That’s the idea. Broken Books is being designed for established firms with clients, services, workflows, and work already underway—not just firms starting from zero.

What if I have 150 or more existing clients?

You shouldn’t have to recreate every client one at a time if a supported bulk setup option can do the job. Efficient configuration for larger firms is part of the onboarding work; supported import methods are still being determined.

Does Broken Books work for solo bookkeepers and teams?

Both are part of the plan. Solo firms shouldn’t need unnecessary employee setup, while team firms need ways to organize roles, assignments, and responsibilities as they grow.

Will my clients have one place to go?

That’s a central part of the experience: one client-facing portal for requests, documents, conversations, and engagement progress instead of sending clients across disconnected applications.

Do I need to rebuild my existing workflows?

The goal is to bring your services, agreement references, historical context, and ongoing work into a connected engagement process—not make you reinvent your firm. Supported transition options will be confirmed as onboarding is validated.

Will recurring bookkeeping start automatically when I add clients?

No automatic activation is intended simply because a client has been added. Recurring service setup and activation are being designed as deliberate steps.

What is BrokenBooks?

BrokenBooks is QuickBooks Online diagnostic and cleanup workflow software for bookkeeping and accounting firms.

Work through the built-in diagnostic questions. Your answers drive the findings, report and cleanup plan. Once the client approves the cleanup work, the system creates the related tasks and client questions and posts those questions to the portal, instead of requiring the firm to build them separately.

The connected engagement extends through proposals, payment, cleanup, CPA preparation and ongoing bookkeeping. Your firm remains responsible for evaluating the evidence, reviewing the outputs and performing the accounting work. End-to-end workflows continue to be tested.

Who is BrokenBooks for?

BrokenBooks is built for bookkeepers, accountants, cleanup specialists, bookkeeping firms, and accounting firms that need a structured way to review QuickBooks Online files.

The two review offerings are Comprehensive Diagnostic and Financial Reliability Review. They give firms a structured way to assess a file and determine what needs attention, with professional judgment retained by the reviewer.

How does BrokenBooks work with QuickBooks Online?

BrokenBooks supports the review and management of QuickBooks Online engagements. The accounting file remains in QuickBooks Online; BrokenBooks provides structure for documenting the review and coordinating the surrounding work.

The current diagnostic relies on reviewer input and professional evaluation. Direct QuickBooks Online API import and automated ledger scanning are not current capabilities being offered.

What does the diagnostic include?

The built-in diagnostic guides the reviewer through questions across the applicable areas of a QuickBooks Online file. It provides an established assessment process rather than requiring your firm to design a review workflow from scratch.

The reviewer answers the questions and evaluates the supporting information. Those answers drive the findings, diagnostic report and cleanup plan, using a consistent process and report structure. The firm reviews the results and unresolved questions before sharing them.

Does BrokenBooks make accounting decisions for me?

No. The reviewer evaluates the evidence and makes the accounting determination.

BrokenBooks carries the reviewer’s answers into structured outputs and the connected workflow. It does not automatically correct the QuickBooks Online file or guarantee the accounting outcome.

What happens when I cannot establish an answer?

An unresolved item can remain visible in the review.

The bookkeeper can document the uncertainty, identify the information needed, and use client clarification to continue the investigation. The process supports recording what remains unknown rather than forcing an unsupported conclusion.

What can clients do in the portal?

The client portal brings together intake, clarification questions and responses, requests, documents, action items, engagement status, and progress visibility. Clients can also use a branded workspace for business and project navigation, milestones, uploads, conversations and attachments, published reports, proposal response, supported payment flows, and recurring onboarding where configured.

Clients can follow diagnostic milestones and see outstanding requests. Their answers stay connected to the engagement while the reviewer’s professional determination remains distinct.

Explore the client portal →

Can clients check progress without asking for an update?

Yes. Progress visibility is part of the client portal.

Clients can follow diagnostic milestones, see outstanding requests and access published results. Internal review notes and diagnostic reasoning remain separate from the information clients see.

How does BrokenBooks support cleanup scope and pricing?

BrokenBooks supports documenting scope and pricing alongside the diagnostic findings and proposal context.

Your firm determines its rates, pricing approach, and final commercial decisions. The professional decides which findings require work and what belongs in the engagement.

Explore cleanup scope and pricing →

How does the diagnostic connect to cleanup execution?

Once the client approves the cleanup work, BrokenBooks automatically creates the tasks and client questions from the review and posts those questions to the portal. Your team does not have to recreate that work as a separate task list or request list.

That connection helps the team understand why the work exists and refer back to the review context during execution. The bookkeeping team remains responsible for performing and reviewing the corrective work.

How will CPA handoff work for a multi-year cleanup?

The intended handoff is a consolidated packet for each yearly project.

Each packet brings together the completed work and relevant context, with links back to the project so the CPA can review the diagnostic report, client questions and answers, supporting information, and unresolved items.

Year-end packet delivery and CPA access are still being developed and validated. Specific access arrangements will be explained as those workflows become available.

Can a cleanup engagement transition into recurring bookkeeping?

Yes. BrokenBooks includes a transition from cleanup closeout into bookkeeping onboarding. The launch workflow creates a linked ongoing project, keeping the cleanup engagement distinct.

The recurring project supports service scope, scheduling, proposals, period tasks, documents, workpapers, client requests, close readiness, and year rollover. Tasks follow the configured services and cadence through monthly and year-end close. The complete cleanup-to-recurring experience continues to be tested and refined before launch.

Is BrokenBooks available to other firms?

BrokenBooks is prelaunch. It is in use at For The Love of Bookkeepers, with client-portal testing underway. It is not yet available to other firms.

Signing up means you’d like occasional BrokenBooks development and launch updates by email. It is not an application to test the software and does not guarantee a launch date.
